Technicians often struggle with proper refrigeration diagnostic techniques, which costs extra time and money. A technician may become frustrated over time because he wants to solve the customer's problem quickly and, do it right the first time. The technician may experience a lack of confidence, which may prevent him from reaching his potential. The one week Refrigeration Technology course enables students to gain not only the theory behind what they already know but the confidence needed to succeed!
Refrigeration Technology primarily focuses on diagnosing A/C and heat pump systems, giving students the opportunity to learn the “right way” to find refrigerant problems. The ability to analyze, balance, and verify a systems charge, performance and efficiency is essential for any HVAC technician. Technicians will also learn safety procedures regarding refrigerant handling for proper system repairs and replacements. When combined with the Electrical Technology Course newer technicians will have the ability to perform residential maintenance.
Each student works individually so regardless of experience, they progress at their own rate. If a student is proficient in any particular subject their lab training will be adjusted accordingly. A low student to instructor ratio allows each technician to receive adequate “one on one” training necessary. Students will spend approximately one-third of their time in the classroom learning theory and two-thirds of their time in lab performing hands-on assignments. When Technicians return to work they are able to put what they have learned into action and increase productivity and efficiency.
What you’ll cover
Hands-on across the week — roughly two-thirds of it in the labs on live, operational equipment.
- Governmental and environmental safety practices.
- Fundamentals of heat transfer and thermodynamics to the refrigeration process.
- Performing A/C Tune-Ups.
- Properly evaluating system indicators such as: entering wet-bulb, indoor and outdoor dry bulb, superheat, sub-cooling, condenser delta-T and indoor delta-T.
- Efficient Comprehensive System Analysis™.
- Refrigerant procedures: tank filling, refrigerant recovery, piping.
- Properly sized refrigeration lines and the effects of improperly sized lines.
- Properly opening a refrigerant system including: pump down, recovery, nitrogen pressure testing, and evacuation.
- Effects of slight overcharge or undercharge to system efficiency.
- Heat Pump systems and their operation in both A/C and heating modes.
- 410A handling and system performance.
- Air-flow design and static pressure testing.
- Problem identification with airflow, miss-matched system components, and restrictions in systems that result in increased utility repair, reduced performance, and system life.
- Winter Time A/C & heat pump analysis in a custom designed “cold room”.
- Brazing copper using an oxygen/acetylene torch as well as a "Turbo" torch.
- Effects of purging and inert gas on refrigerant lines during the brazing process to promote elimination of oxidation deposits.
Who should attend
EPA certification is offered at an additional cost of $75 per exam.
Beginning (Novice) Techs:

- EPA certification if required.
- For HVAC maintenance we recommend Electrical Technology in conjunction with Refrigeration Technology.
Intermediate Techs:
